In a project that is equal parts curatorship and construction, CSA recently partnered with the Galerie Zdeněk Sklenář in Prague, Czech Republic, to scan 60 pieces of art by renown Czech sculptor and painter Karel Malich.

The sculptures, which were created an average of 40 years ago using fragile materials like wire, paper, and wood, were typically intended as a models for much larger, outdoor pieces. The ability to scale such models upward made laser scanning a natural fit, generating point cloud information that was converted to digital 3D models (AutoCAD® format), 2D drawings (including detailed production drawing), and video files.

The scanning required took two operators five working days to complete, and was performed with a specialized hand-held scanner well suited for such small-scale subjects.
